Chic Ballet Flats – London Sole

OliviaPalermoLeopardFlatsWhen I was younger I wore 4inch healed boots and pumps, not anymore.

It’s been years since I decided I wanted to be closer to the ground and started buying ballet flats galore.

imagesMy favorite place to shop for them was at London Sole, their  Maiden Lane location, but they recently closed.

My size various depending on the style, but one thing I am sure of is that I am drawn to the animal prints.

I just hope they reopen their San Francisco location.

Favorite Article Of Clothing – Jigsaw London Cardigans

light_greyI usually don’t post about fashion, however my sister Wendy informed me that I needed to add more elements to my blogs.

Favorite Fashion Icons: Olivia Palermo, Sofia Sanchez Barrenechea and Kate Moss.  Why? Because their everyday wear is clean, classic and edgy.  They know how to mix high/low end basics with sheer aplomb. 1017862_bk000_alt-1

My favorite store in San Francisco? It’s Jigsaw London, famous for the fact that the Duchess of Cambridge worked in their London Office before marrying Prince William.  But they are loved by San Franciscan’s because of their various amazing knits, we’re talking about cardigan city.

My sisters and I frequent the shop on Fillmore St. after dinner and right before our movie at the Kabuki Theater.

We have over 10 cardigans each, in every color, although I stick to black and various shades of grey.

Lately I’ve been obsessing on whether I should get the grey Cocoon Cardigan, since I’ve been very happy with the black one I bought last month.

The cardigans are affordable and make great basics, you can wear them with your skinny jeans, t-shirts and other favorite items of clothing.

The Rules of Wearing Red

queen_elizabeth_iiI was never one to shy away from wearing makeup, especially red lipstick. Wearing red lipstick for most of us is like wearing high-heels, either you do or you don’t. I definitely wear red lipstick and try not to wear high-heels, although I’ve been known to sport a pair on occasion.

The women I admired in my youth were Diana Vreeland, the Duchess of Windsor, Coco Chanel and Babe Paley. I associated red lipstick with strong, successful, stylish and glamorous women. These amazing women understood the power and allure that only a great red can give. Red lipstick is the equivalent of a man’s power tie.

Red Lips are a statement, like a great piece of jewelry, heels or that much coveted handbag. I wore the same shade of red lipstick throughout my twenties, until it was discontinued. Since then I’ve been searching for that perfect shade of red, and realized that no two shades of red are alike.

Red can be intimidating, but red doesn’t mean a full siren mouth. Here is a quick and easy guide to the rules of wearing red.

1) There isn’t ONE perfect shade of red for every woman – There are so many gorgeous shades suitable for every skin tone. The objective is to try on as many as possible and look in the mirror, which shade makes you look brighter, fresher, more radiant.

2) Never wear red with heavy makeup – When wearing red the rest of our makeup pallet should be understated and super-casual. The quickest way to add age to your appearance is to wear heavy makeup.

3) It’s okay to dump the matching lip pencil – a more modern approach to wearing red is to build color by using a lip brush or your finger tip.

4) Keep your options open – Sometimes the texture of a red lipstick can be intimidating, there are many new formulations of red, there are glosses, stains, tints, glazes, matte, sheer and shimmers.

5) Remove the thoughts of associating red lips with sexual connotations – red lipstick is the quickest youth giving, skin-illuminating, eye brightening beauty trick around.

Remember that you can achieve red without wearing red – bricks, berries, and sheer red glosses give the effect of wearing red without being high maintenance – Melissa Prestinario, Makeup Artist Chanel Cosmetics.

If you’re wearing red for the first time, try brighter shades in sheer textures, or apply red with a lip brush for that gorgeous buildable color.

I personally love red lipstick because it gives me that Je ne sais quoi that only a great red can give.

The Modern Rules of Wearing Red

Red Lipstick for generations has attracted admirers, it’s a come-hither hue that commands respect and get’s you noticed.Red pouts have been favored by princesses, movie stars, prime ministers and stylish women all around-the-world.

The best red lipstick application will always be the Parisian way of wearing your favorite crimson,  with minimal makeup, but the rules have changed thanks to a sleuth of makeup artists that created innovative techniques that compliment a variety of skin tones.

1. There isn’t ONE perfect shade of red for every woman – There are so many gorgeous shades suitable for every skin tone. The objective is to try on as many as possible and look in the mirror, which shade makes you look brighter, fresher, more radiant.

2. Keep Your Options Open – Sometimes the texture of a red lipstick can be intimidating, there are many new formulations of red, there are glosses, stains, tints, glazes, matte, sheers and shimmers.

3. Change Things Up by switching your traditional black eyeliner for a white iridescent eye liner, this will create a more modern approach to wearing red.

4. Try a Nude Lip Pencil instead of a red lip pencil, this will make your cupids bow noticeable and you may get to skip the botox.

5. Wear a Smokey Eye – you can wear full-on makeup, it needs to be applied correctly and blended, my advice  is to visit your favorite counter and take a class, they are complimentary with any two item purchase.

6. Try colored Mascara like Purple, Grey or Green, this will add more depth and texture to your favorite red pout.

7. Go Ombre with your reds by using different shades of crimson, add lip gloss to create dimension.

My friend Michele Burke created an easy guide to help steer us in the right direction.

Michele’s Red Lipstick Tips

Warm skin tones:  Have greenish-blue veins and creamy-white teeth, they look best in Fire engine reds, watermelon, oranges and nectarines.  For pink reds I recommend coral, tangerine, peach or salmon.

Cool skin tones:  Have bluish veins and their teeth are usually blue/white or gray/white they can wear maroon, burgundy, fuchsia or raspberry reds, anything with a pink undertone.

Keeping Your Red Lipstick From Turning:

My friend Alphonse over at Musebeauty.pro says that when looking for a lip color, place it on your pointing finger tip. Press thumb against the middle of finger to have the blood rush to the tip. This will mimic a shade closer to one’s natural lips. Also applying lip color on the back of your hand has a different base than natural lip color, that is why it looks different or why the color changes.

Everyone can wear red lipstick, it isn’t for the faint-of-heart but you can find tinted lip balms to get you started or try pink-reds before jumping into the world of crimson pouts.
