The Modern Rules of Wearing Red

via Julie Hewett.com
via Julie Hewett.com

I am re-posting this piece as I don’t want anyone to forget what this blog is actually all about, it’s about our favorite lipstick shade, crimson and it’s various hues.

I haven’t found a new shade recently because I’ve been hooked on my Jungle Red and Dragon Girl by Nars but will hopefully have a new shade soon.

I hope you enjoy this piece the 2nd time as much as you did the first.

*Red Lipstick for generations has attracted admirers, it’s a come-hither hue that commands respect and get’s you noticed.

Red pouts have been favored by princesses, movie stars, prime ministers and stylish women all around-the-world.

The best red lipstick application will always be the Parisian way of wearing your favorite crimson,  with minimal makeup, but the rules have changed thanks to a sleuth of makeup artists that created innovative techniques that compliment a variety of skin tones.

1. There isn’t ONE perfect shade of red for every woman – There are so many gorgeous shades suitable for every skin tone. The objective is to try on as many as possible and look in the mirror, which shade makes you look brighter, fresher, more radiant.

2. Keep Your Options Open – Sometimes the texture of a red lipstick can be intimidating, there are many new formulations of red, there are glosses, stains, tints, glazes, matte, sheers and shimmers.

3. Change Things Up by switching your traditional black eyeliner for a white iridescent eye liner, this will create a more modern approach to wearing red.

4. Try a Nude Lip Pencil instead of a red lip pencil, this will make your cupids bow noticeable and you may get to skip the botox.

5. Wear a Smokey Eye – you can wear full-on makeup, it needs to be applied correctly and blended, my advice  is to visit your favorite counter and take a class, they are complimentary with any two item purchase.

6. Try colored Mascara like Purple, Grey or Green, this will add more depth and texture to your favorite red pout.

7. Go Ombre with your reds by using different shades of crimson, add lip gloss to create dimension.

My friend Michele Burke created an easy guide to help steer us in the right direction.

Michele’s Red Lipstick Tips

Warm skin tones:  Have greenish-blue veins and creamy-white teeth, they look best in Fire engine reds, watermelon, oranges and nectarines.  For pink reds I recommend coral, tangerine, peach or salmon.

Cool skin tones:  Have bluish veins and their teeth are usually blue/white or gray/white they can wear maroon, burgundy, fuchsia or raspberry reds, anything with a pink undertone.

Keeping Your Red Lipstick From Turning:

My friend Alphonse over at Musebeauty.pro says that when looking for a lip color, place it on your pointing finger tip. Press thumb against the middle of finger to have the blood rush to the tip. This will mimic a shade closer to one’s natural lips. Also applying lip color on the back of your hand has a different base than natural lip color, that is why it looks different or why the color changes.

Everyone can wear red lipstick, it isn’t for the faint-of-heart but you can find tinted lip balms to get you started or try pink-reds before jumping into the world of crimson pouts.

Here’s to the New Modern Rules of Wearing RED!

BB Creme – Orlane

BB cremeI don’t know about you guys, but I love clear, bright and healthy skin with my signature pop of crimson.

I’ve been suffering with dreadful eye allergies and have not been able to wear mascara this week.

My look to say is minimal since I hardly wear makeup to begin with.

I just tried my New BB Creme by Orlane this morning and loved it.  My skin is healthy and protected with just the right amount of color.

A plus is that this BB Creme has an SPF of 25 and it’s Anti-Fatigue, because let’s face it sometimes we just feel under the weather.

What’s your favorite BB Creme?

A Red Lipstick to Consider – Lip Maestro by Giorgio Armani

chinese lacquerI’ve been carrying around clipped ads I tore out of my current issue of Marie Claire, why? Because I am dying to know what shade of Lip Maestro the model is wearing.

That’s the thing about ads, they don’t always tell you what shade is featured.

Hopefully when I make it down to the Armani counter at Saks the sales associate will know.

However, after starring at the shades online I think it might be Chinese Lacquer, but I could be wrong.

Does anyone know?

The Dior Magazine

photoI can’t help it, I loved it. I just wish it had more articles like The Edit on Net-A-Porter.

However, I came away in-love with the New Safari Collection, loving those heels. And Jessica Biel looks amazing, the makeup and hair simply stunning.

I also love that they added gorgeous pictures of their new store openings and cultural events.

This is one magazine to keep for future inspiration.

Protecting Your Skin – New Polyphenols 15 by Caudalie

Caudalie

Can I just say that I love the New Caudalie Polyphenol C15 collection.  I’ve noticed that my skin is smoother, pores are more minimized and skin is glowing.

Too bad I’m suffering from eye allergies, otherwise I would be completely happy.

What makes this collection special is that it’s affordable, and delivers it’s promise of more youthful looking skin.

Some of you may now know this, but besides my love of literature and red lipstick I am a true skincare junkie.

What are Polyphenols?  They are the most powerful antioxidant available and they protect the skin from smoke, pollution and other outside elements that cause premature aging skin.

Isn’t it time you protected your skin?

Emma Watson in Paris – Fashion Week

via Yahoo.com
via Yahoo.com

I just had to share this with you guys.  Doesn’t Emma Watson look utterly chic?

This is my usual uniform, black and red lipstick.  Of course I wear the occasional nude or pink but let’s face it, red is my signature.

What do you guys think?

New CC Cream – “IT” Cosmetics

photoCan I just tell you guys that I am in CC Cream heaven.  Not only is the compact gorgeous, but the application is flawless.  The CC Cream just absorbs and blends into the skin, leaving it smooth and selfie ready.

I collect compacts now and will repeat myself, it’s not a bad thing to have several different foundations, compacts etc.

The only one beauty product you don’t want to open at the same time are multiple mascaras.  Why? Because they expire within three months.

This is one CC Cream that I just love!

Pretty In Pink – YSL Beaute Kiss & Blush

product-1I know, I know it’s pink, but isn’t it pretty? I saw this and fell head over heals over the color.

Now that I’ve seen it, I’m going to have to visit the YSL counter and investigate the rest of the shades.

Especially if I can wear it as a lip product. This shade would look pretty on my cheeks though.

She used a combination of Juara Skincare and Votre Vu cosmetics.

I’m loving Kerri’s classic beauty and that shade of crimson.

Tina applied French Kiss in Tatiana  by Votre Vu and doesn’t it look lovely?
