Don’t Handbag Shame Me or My Friends – Handbag Envy Isn’t Fun

I recently read a post from one of my favorite interior design bloggers, and I’ve been offended. I felt like Carrie Bradshaw in the Shoe Shame Episode on “Sex & the City”.  It is not for me to judge others by how they choose to spend their money.  Also a good portion of women dress for themselves and not so that someone else will admire them or love them.  From my experience it’s the confident stylish women that dress for themselves, a great handbag is on equal footing with a man’s car, need I say more?

“I was brought up to save save save, never spend too much and to live well within your means. And this is a fantastic lesson to have instilled in you, especially in a world where I see girls buying bags that cost the amount of a major appliance on credit so they can impress people they don’t know. – Erin Gates

I admire women with style, elegance and aspire to be more like them by getting ideas from them on how to put myself together i.e. Olivia Palermo or the Olsen twins.

I wouldn’t be caught dead carrying a FAKE handbag or knock-off of a favorite that happened to inspire Tory Burch. (Although I am a fan of Tory Burch Ballet flats) I learned that the right handbag, shoes and accessories can transform an H&M t-shirt or black cardigan from Jiggsaw or BCBG.

My mother told me that in this life I had to choose, to either travel, dress well or have a social life…I chose to dress well for a long time and have since acquired various luxury items, i.e shoes, handbags, wallets, jewelry and it has never been the items I purchased, but the items I didn’t that I regret like the YSL Leopard print scarf. How I lament not having bought that scarf when I had the opportunity.

Sorry to disappoint you Erin, but not every girl buys a bag she can’t afford to try and impress people she doesn’t know, maybe this is something your friends do.  Sounds like handbag envy to me.

My friends and I acquire stylish pieces including handbags because they reflect how we see ourselves….just like that much coveted coffee table.

Red Lipstick – Très Chic

French women for the most part are chic, they seem to posses an innate chic gene that inspires the rest of us.  Recently I stumbled upon a new fashion blog “Keep it Chic” and instantly fell in love, especially with the post by Jennifer Alfano “What French Women Get Right.”

I admire stylish women, especially those that are not afraid of red lipstick. What did Jennifer notice about their makeup?  That either they wore red lipstick and mascara or a kohl-rimmed eye with bare lips.  She did not see a pink or nude lip….I personally can’t wear a nude lip if my life depended on it and I can only wear certain pink (I only have one and it’s by Chanel).

For years I’ve worn various shades of Reds and loaded up on mascara, keeping it clean. I’m thrilled to know that’s what the chicest women in the world wear.

Now if only I can bring myself to wear my navy eyeliner by Nars without my signature red lip….

Here’s to Red!

August’s Red – Belle Noir by Julie Hewett

Harper’s Bazaar recently came out with a guide for finding the perfect shade of red, according to age and not skin tone, which I found fascinating, because if you’re in your 40’s you should opt for a coral/orange red. Which could explain one of the reasons why I’ve been obsessed with Belle Noir by Julie Hewett.

My friend Michele Burke has another rule of thumb that guides us in the right direction for the perfect crimson:

Warm skin tones: Have greenish-blue veins and creamy-white teeth, they look best in Fire engine reds, watermelon, oranges and nectarines. For pink reds I recommend coral, tangerine, peach or salmon.

I’m in-between and after looking at Julie Hewett’s Red Lipstick chart my main concerns are: Do my teeth look white-enough and is my skin radiant? If I can say yes to both, then I’ve found a winner.

Belle Noir is a triple-pigmented matte formula, long-lasting and gentle on lips thanks to the healing camellia oil, lips stay soft, supple and kissable all afternoon.

I love that the color fades naturally during the course of the day, leaving behind a gorgeous shade, saying goodbye to dry lips has never been so easy.

The perfect 50’s inspired Crimson for this Birthday Girl!

Rich Lip Tints – Rachel’s Red by Clark’s Botanicals

My mother wanted to name me Rachel, but my father beat her to it and named me after his mother.

The older we get, and as the weather changes we want to be more minimal in our makeup application, at least I know I do.

I wish I was the kind of girl who could just get-up and go, perhaps if I had been named Rachel.

Rich reds are my specialty and recently with the summer weather I’ve been inclined to dab-on lip tints in various shades.  A few of my favorites are by Clark’s Botanicals.

Rachel Red is a gorgeous red that leaves your lips feeling like butter, soft and supple.

A True Red that can be layered from sheer to intense for long-lasting color and hydration that lasts all day.

But guess what? I’ve discovered that I like pink too!

Must have been all the pink girlie dresses my mother made me wear as a child.  Alexandra Rose is a sheer and elegant pink suitable for day or night and for those City Girls who want to rediscover their childhoods, before the Red.

Summer Berries – TopShop Makeup

Summer is fast approaching and a more minimal makeup application is required.  No one wants to drench their skin in heavy makeup, or leave lipstick stains on their coffee cups or boyfriends.

I know I don’t, and I’m always on the look out for a one step application that keeps my pout in signature red, even after morning coffee and kisses in the afternoon.

A new chosen favorite is Berry by TopShop.  A rich deep red that can be intensified or worn as a light stain for a more natural effect.

I loved that I was able to line my lips and fill in without blotting.  I applied a little lip balm for more moisture and my lips stayed berrylicious all day.

Berry is for all skin tones, just make sure it works with your pearly whites.

Lip Markers by TopShop are the perfect travel companions this summer, they fit easily in your makeup bag and make touch-ups when necessary easy-peasy.
